Don’t miss the chance to see Scottish Canals on your next visit to Scotland.
Whether you are visiting for a trip through the past, or simply to enjoy the beauty of nature and wildlife, the Scottish canals are sure to impress.
This post will help prepare you to see the Scottish Canals, including Union Canal, Falkirk Wheel, and Kelpies.
Union Canal – See your first Scottish Canal
The Union Canal opened in 1822, and is part of a larger series of canals that connect Scotland’s inner waterways. The Union Canal is about 31 miles long, and spans from nearby Edinburgh to Falkirk.
Falkirk, by the way, is home to the famous Falkirk Wheel. More about that later 😉
Prior to the introduction of railways, Scotland’s canals were a primary method of transportation of both people and goods. Today, visitors can explore the canal by boat, foot, or bike.

Wildlife to See in Scotland’s Canals
When visiting Scotland’s canals, don’t miss the easy-going beauty of natural wildlife. I particularly enjoyed the variety of birds that make the canals their home. See Scottish canals the right way, by enjoying wildlife!
Falkirk Wheel
Approaching Falkirk
If you are lucky, you will hire a boat tour that will allow you to experience the lifting and lowering of the Falkirk Wheel. This is a must-see!
When approaching the wheel from the upper chamber, you may find yourself wondering about the impressive mechanics. It is a whole new perspective of the Scottish Canals.
Falkirk Wheel
Watching the wheel in operation is an absolute must! The ride is short, but is very impressive to witness.
The Kelpies
Don’t miss a trip to the Kelpies! The Kelpies are an impressive art sculpture that towers above spectators nearby Falkirk. Did you know… you can actually view the Kelpies from the inside? To do this, you will need to book an official tour.
So that’s it! This post has included a starting point for how to see Scottish Canals. Make sure to do your own research before you go. As a reminder, don’t miss:
