There are SO MANY places to visit in Hamburg in one day! Hamburg is Germany’s largest harbor city and is seated along the River Elbe. Hamburg has a rich and important history, marked by production, trade, and even tragedy. Today, Hamburg’s historic canals and massive 17th, 18th, and 19th century warehouses are preserved and reimagined into some of the most awesome attractions of eastern Europe.
Modern structures are now intermixed with historic preservations. Some structures, such as the impressive Elbphilharmonie, combine old with new. Others, such as the famous Miniature Wunderland, make use of existing historic space.
In addition to historic and cultural significance, I should mention that Hamburg is a ton of fun! Night lift is fantastic, and Hamburg’s very own Red Light District is packed with vibrant bars. There is truly an option for anyone. Rest assured that you will find festivities and fellowship at all times of the day and night.
Of all of the places to visit in Hamburg in one day, read on to discover the 10 most awesome attractions.
10 Awesome Attractions in Hamburg, Germany
1. Hamburg Bike Tour
Okay, so this one isn’t quite an attraction… but you HAVE to book a bike tour in Hamburg if you truly want to see it all in a day! Be warned – the cobblestone is at times unkind (if you know what I mean). But, it is absolutely worth it to unlock the true beauty of Hamburg, Germany.
Hamburg City Cycles is the tour that I love the most! The guides are highly engaging, and the route is a perfect sampling of all that Hamburg has to offer.
2. Miniatur Wunderland
Germany’s most popular tourist attraction is Miniature Wonderland. This ginormous collection of miniature displays is insanely impressive! You will be amazed by the extensive detail involved with every aspect of the experience.
From a model railroad that spans 15,400 m, to an airport system consisting of over 50 model planes, the engineering and design behind the exhibit allow for the miniature yet realistic portrayal of scenes from around the world.
3. Elbphilharmonie
The Elbphilharmonie is a grand concert hall. In addition to opera and music, visitors may enjoy fabulous restaurants, bars, office spaces, and more! If you are traveling to Hamburg on a budget, note that the Elbphilharmonie Plaza is open to to the public.
4. Harbor Boat Tour
After enjoying scenic views from above, I recommend to enjoy a whole new vantage point through a Hamburg harbor boat tour. Also consider grabbing a beverage from a nearby stand to make the most of your boat journey.
5. Elbe Tunnel
So far, so good? The impressive Elbe Tunnel is next on our list. This preserved historic site is a bit off of the beaten path, but is a great family-friendly stop within Hamburg’s many awesome attractions. Especially enticing is the zero-cost entry for pedestrians.
6. Hamburg Rathaus
The Hamburg city hall is located within Hamburg’s historic district. If you visit, be sure to learn the tried history of the city hall, including the destruction by fire in 1842 and the re-opening in 1897. While you are in the area, be sure to also check out the Rathausmarkt.
7. Admire Gardens and Architecture
8. Explore St Pauli
Not only is Hamburg great to explore, but so is nearby St Pauli! In St Pauli, you will find a break from the more formal layout of the previous locations.
9. Night Out on Reeperbahn
Don’t use up all of your energy during your day of exploring! Make sure to save some stamina to check out Hamburg’s vibrant night lift. Although you can’t go wrong, I highly recommend Murphy’s Irish Pub.
10. Hamburg Central Station
Finally, check out the Hamburg Central Station. This station is centrally located and is full of high speed trains that travel around the country. The rail system is set up such that trains congregate in a hub where passengers board at specific platforms onto their designated wagons.
If you’re visiting Hamburg for only a few days, chances are that you will travel in via train. Make sure you plan extra time in your itinerary to check out the station!
